Wether you are starting a Magento store, or already own one, eventually you’ll ask yourself the question: what kind of Magento hosting is right for me? It’s a genuine question as most online store owners are either overpaying for a plan which is way to big for their needs, or selling themselves short by hosting their Magento shop on a crappy server which really has a negative impact on your sites performance and rankings. In this post we will give you some guidelines that you can use to check if you are with the right hosting provider.
Shared Hosting
If you are currently hosting your Magento installation on a shared hosting server, we advice you to immediately move it to either a VPS or a dedicated server (checkout which you need to choose below). The reason for this is that Magento is a really big platform that does require some resources that a shared hosting environment can’t give you. We’re not saying you should upgrade directly to a dedicated server with multiple Octa-core processors, but a medium to high range VPS is recommended.
Slow loading times are a death sentence for your Ecommerce sales. Nobody likes to wait 4 seconds before a page is loaded which will result in a loss of visitors who move over to normally functioning websites. An other factor you have to keep in mind is that Google has integrated site loading speed as a ranking factor in their algorithms. Google’s mission is to serve their searchers with the best websites possible, and if you have a website that takes 4 seconds to load, you’re going to receive a lower position than a page that has a 1 second loading time.
VPS or Dedicated?
Are you hosting your Magento store on a virtual private server or a dedicated server? When the answer is the latter, you are probably overpaying for a server thats too big for your website at this moment. A dedicated server is only needed when you are serving more than 100.000 unique visitors per month. Everything below that level can be perfectly handled by a mid to high range VPS.
